Preparing your home & vehicle for bad weather
Protecting Your Home Before the storm:
Inspect roof for loose shingles or damage; repair as needed
Install impact-resistant roofing materials if you’re in a hail-prone area
Secure gutters and downspouts to prevent water damage
Trim tree branches near your house to avoid falling limbs
Move patio furniture and grills indoors or secure them
Cover windows with strom shutters or plywood if hail is severe
Use your smart phone to walk through and video the inside of the house. You’d be surprised how much you forget you own when asked to create a list after a total loss like a fire. To be really thorough take pictures of what is inside closets and drawers. It all adds up.
Check homeowners’ insurance to be sure you have wind/hail coverage. Be sure you understand your deductible.
Homeowners policies DO NOT typically cover flood damage.
Protecting Your Home During the Storm:
Stay indoors and away from windows
Close curtains or blinds to prevent glass injuries
Monitor weather alerts via phone or radio
Avoid using electrical appliances during lightning
Protecting your Vehicles Before the Storm:
Park in a garage or carport if possible
Use a hail car cover or thick blankets if parking outdoors
Avoid parking under trees or power lines
Keep your auto insurance current and review coverages. Falling objects would be considered a comprehensive claim
Protecting your Vehicles During the Storm:
Do not drive unless absolutely necessary
If driving, find shelter like a covered parking lot or underpass
Angle the car so hail hits the windshield, which is stronger than side windows
